EXPERIENCE THE ROCKY & SANDY DESERTS OF SOUTH AFRICA...
Situated towards the Western parts of South Africa lies an arid region with distinct Rocky deserts in the Augrabies National Park and Sandy Desert landscapes in the Kgagalagadi Transfrontier Park (Kalahari Desert).
The Kalahari is famous for its red colour and mix of sandy plains and arid savannahs littered with dead trees and animal skeletons. The Kalahari lies in South Africa’s Northern Cape province and crosses the borders with Namibia and Botswana.
Day 1: Upington Airport to Augrabies Falls National Park
On arrival at Upington Airport, you will be met by your guide and transferred to the Luxury Oasis Hotel where you can freshen up and enjoy a rest before the excitement of the tour begins.
In the late afternoon you will be collected from the hotel and treated to a River Cruise on the mighty Orange River with Sundowners and Snacks. Back at the hotel you are invited to an interesting and informative presentation presented by your guide on the tour lying ahead and what you can expect especially in the Augrabies National Park and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. This is then followed by the guides “welcome dinner” at the restaurant.
Day 2 & 3: Upington to Augrabies Falls National Park
After a scrumptious breakfast at the hotel you will be transferred from Upington to the Augrabies Falls National Park.
The Augrabies Falls is a breathtaking waterfall on the Orange River stretching 240 metres (800ft) deep and 18 kilometres (10 mi) long. There are various viewpoints and decks from which one can marvel at this amazing site.
During our time at Augrabies you will also enjoy a game drive exploring the rocky desert landscape, go on a guided walk to see “Arrow Point”, “The Potholes” and “Moonrock” and set out at night on a nightdrive looking for the nocturnal animals calling Augrabies home.
Day 4: Augrabies to Molopo
Today we say farewell to Augrabies and take the road further North towards the Molopo region of the Northern Cape, which is also known as the gateway to the Khalahari desert.
We stop at a local wine farm for a Brandy & Chocolate Pairing before we visit a true Bushman (Koi San) settlement. Here you will get to interact with the bushman and learn more about their customs, traditions and ways of making a living in the desert.
After a long day on the road we stop over at the Molopo Khalahari Lodge for a well deserved rest before we enter the desert the next day.
Day 5 & 6: Molopo to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
One of the highlights of our desert experience is exploring the dunes of the Khalahari with a wildlife biologist. We also visit a Meerkat (Suricate) sanctuary before heading to the world famous Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park where we are met by our guides at the main gate to be transported in open safari vehicles to the !Xaus Desert Lodge where we will stay for the next two days.
At the lodge guests enjoy daily game drives, night drives and desert walks. There is also a swimming pool to cool down in during the hot summer days. One night a star gazing experience will also be on offer for you to learn about and enjoy the Southern Night Skies.
Day 7: Kgalagadi to Upington
This is our last day and after breakfast we set out on a game drive en-route to the main gate of the Kgalagadi to catch our transfer from the park back to Upington Airport.
The transfer should take about 7 hours so guests will be in time to board the late afternoon flight back to Johannessburg or Cape Town.
